Hepatitis Outreach Society
May 17th - Café Scientifique: Event to promote understanding of Hepatitis/HIV co-infection. May 19th - Partnering with public health, Canadian Liver Foundation, local volunteers and Capital Health, the Hepatitis Outreach Society will provide hepatitis information, education, support services, and promotional materials at various locations throughout the province.

Northern AIDS Connection Society
The Northern AIDS Connection Society (NACS) will have displays set up at different locations in the northern region of Nova Scotia and will distribute posters, brochures and other materials on hepatitis C throughout Northern Nova Scotia. NACS will also be working closely with community partners through the Hepatitis C Aware Project Phase 2 with workshops, surveys and distribution of promotional material.

NEW BRUNSWICK
AIDS New Brunswick
During the month leading up to World Hepatitis Day, staff and volunteers from AIDS New Brunswick will send out World Hepatitis Day promotional/educational materials to local organizations such as the health clinics, tattoo parlours, aestheticians, group homes etc. Additionally, AIDS New Brunswick will be distributing handouts with hepatitis testing and prevention options, and AIDS NB contact and program information at information booths. Promotional/awareness material will also be distributed to people who use injection drugs through the Fredericton Needle Exchange Program. A World Hepatitis Day notice will be sent out through AIDS New Brunswick’s email list serve, on twitter and on facebook.

QUEBEC
Centre Associatif Polyvalent d’Aide Hépatite C (CAPAHC)
CAPAHC is organizing an event at the Leclerc Penitentiary. There will be quiz games and brochures will be distributed with the help of CAPAHC staff and a public health nurse that specializes in STBBIs. In the evening, an awareness raising support group meeting will take place where materials will be distributed.

Canadian Hemophilia Society (CHS)
CHS is holding its Annual General Meeting (AGM) in Montreal on May 15, 2009. Board representatives and volunteers from CHS’s 10 Canadian chapters will be present. It will be a good opportunity to raise awareness about World Hepatitis Day with these individuals so that they may continue to raise awareness with their own members and in their own communities on and around May 19.

A symposium is being held entitled «Hépatite C: 20 ans déjà » referring to the fact that it has been twenty years since the discovery of HCV. There will be two opening speeches and several scientific presentations. The presentations will reflect on the evolution of HCV research over the past two decades and will emphasize the contribution of francophone researchers on HCV research.

Sandi’s Crusade Against Hepatitis/Durham Hepatitis C Support Group
A table will be set up at the Five Points Plaza store with educational material on hepatitis. The store front window display is focused on support for Liver Health. Nutrition suppliers are donating gift baskets as a raffle fundraiser with money going towards the purchase of a Fibroscan machine in Durham Region.

A Parliamentary Breakfast is being sponsored and chaired by Joy Smith, MP, Chair of the Standing Committee on Health to raise awareness among Members of Parliament and senators about hepatitis B and C. Panellists will include André Picard, Public Health Reporter at the Globe and Mail and Leona Quewezance, the Program Director at All Nations Hope AIDS Network.

Hepatitis Health Fair: this will be a drop-in for the community to access health information, blood test screening and vaccinations for hepatitis. There will also be health promotion/prevention bulletin boards about harm reduction strategies and needle use. The client poster contest entries will be displayed during the health fair and the client’s will vote and assign the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners. The Works will launch their Hepatitis C support group on May 19.

South Riverdale Community Health Centre
In the winter of 2009-2010, The East Toronto Hepatitis C Program's support groups engaged in a photovoice project, 36 people living with Hepatitis C participated. They were given cameras and asked to take photos of what it's like to live with hepatitis C. For World Hepatitis Day, all the photos will be displayed in the lobby of South Riverdale CHC and participants of the project will be available to discuss the photos and their personal experience. The general public, policy makes, those living with hepatitis C, politicians, students, health care providers, and front line workers, will be invited to attend the group exhibit and learn about hepatitis. This will be an all day event with food served in the afternoon.

Niagara Region Public Health
Niagara Region Public Health has scheduled interview time with a local cable channel to talk about hepatitis - including who should be tested and the role of the Public Health. To increase awareness of hepatitis C among the general public and physicians regarding testing for hepatitis C, the “Primary Care Management of Chronic Hepatitis C - Professional Desk Reference 2009” (Pinette GD, Cox JJ, Heathcote J, Moore L, Adamowski K, Riehl G) will be mailed to approximately 270 physicians in the Niagara region. Information about World Hepatitis Day will be also featured on the Niagara Region Public Health website, facebook and twitter.

AIDS Thunder Bay
The day will begin with an awareness breakfast to be held in a local hotel banquet room. The breakfast is open to community partners, sister agencies as well as the general public. The Keynote speaker – a local epidemiologist - will discuss hepatitis B and C in the community. Following the breakfast, there will be tables and displays set up in the local shopping mall where staff will talk to the public about hepatitis B and C in Thunder Bay. Resources from the CATIE Hep C Toolbox, the Canadian Liver Foundation, the Canadian Hemophilia Association and locally produced materials from the TBDHU and AIDS Thunder Bay will be distributed.

There will be a presentation at Cambrain College on hepatitis C safety and prevention with 200 people expected to attend. In addition, information about hepatitis will be distributed at a local high school and a table will be set up outside a local mall in downtown Sudbury where a volunteer will be handing out educational information. The AIDS Network
There will be a Hepatitis C Awareness Week. The focus will be on clients who use the mobile Needle Exchange Van. There will be increased distribution of hepatitis C resources to injection drug users and individuals involved in sex work. The World Hepatitis Day stickers will be used on the supplies distributed. The week will conclude with a Health Promotion Lunch. A Hepatitis C specialist will do a presentation at the luncheon about treatment co-infection, treatment options, and re-infection. Community members, community partners, and clients will be invited to attend. A similar event will take place in the Halton Region to increase awareness in that area.

Canadian AIDS Treatment Information Exchange
A two-day capacity-building workshop in Halifax will provide up-to-date information on hepatitis C to frontline workers in Atlantic Canada. The workshop will include information on Hep C basics, testing issues, prevention and transmission, treatment and co-infection with HIV, which will be presented by community and outreach workers, people living with Hep C, nurses, physicians, and harm reduction workers.

Sherbourne Health Centre
Information on hepatitis and World Hepatitis Day activities will be posted on the Sherbourne Health Centre bulletin board (located in the lobby where clients sit and wait for their appointments). The Centre operates The Rotary Club of Toronto Health Bus which makes regular stops during the week at local shelters, drop-in centres, community centers, and Out of the Cold locations. During these stops, individuals who are under-housed and homeless receive basic health care services. During the week of World Hepatitis Day, staff on the Health Bus will be increasing hepatitis awareness at each of the stops by handing out pamphlets and harm reduction kits. In addition, information will be given on where and how to access the Hepatitis C program. Sherbourne Health Centre has also recently embarked on a Newcomer program. This program aims to provide health care services to individuals who identify as being a newcomer to Canada. The Newcomer clinic runs every Thursday morning. An information session on hepatitis will be conducted on May 20, during clinic hours. Clients will be given hepatitis information. Efforts will be made to provide Hepatitis information in different languages so as to meet the needs of the clients who access the clinic.

Regeneration Outreach Community partnering with HepCCanada
On May 19th - World Hepatitis Day, Regeneration Outreach Community will host its AGM and launch C'ing Tomorrow - a Hepatitis C Support Program for individuals and those who support them as they live with HCV. There will also be an outreach component that will do street outreach and community presentations with a focus on youth. With all its members and community agencies present, Regeneration Outreach Community will raise awareness to the increasing numbers affected by the hepatitis C virus (HCV) motivating them to spread the word about the C’ing Tomorrow program and the critical need address the lack of services and support available across the country to those living with HCV.

Volunteers from all organizations participating will gather together in downtown Winnipeg and branch off into smaller groups to go into the streets of downtown Winnipeg during the lunch-hour to handout information. Every 12th person will be tagged by being given a “1 in 12” item. This will emphasize the "one in 12" World Hepatitis Day message.

SASKATCHEWAN
Regina Qu'Appelle Health Region Population and Public Health Services
An information day will be held at Carmichael Outreach, where there will be a display of hepatitis information and pamphlets. This will be staffed by Public Health Nurses, Community Health Workers, and some volunteers and staff from Carmichael Outreach. This will be an opportunity to discuss hepatitis and transmission with the clients, and different methods they can take to reduce the risk of acquiring these diseases. Public health nurses will be available to test the clients for hepatitis if they are interested. Those requiring vaccine for hepatitis A and B will be able to be immunized on-site that day as well.

Saskatchewan HIV HCV Nursing Education Organization are planning to send out email communications to our new members and also partners and supporters in Saskatchewan. Promotional items will be shared with provincial network to share the message and raise awareness. They will also be sending information to local media and discussing the hepatitis at conferences.

Harm Reduction/Safeworks Alberta Health Service
A display board will be placed in a public area of a large community health care centre. The display will address hepatitis A, B and C with emphasis on how to protect oneself and where to get testing. Tattooing concerns will be highlighted. On World Hepatitis Day, the display will be manned and information will be provided and questions will be addressed. An unmanned display will also go up at CUPS Medical clinic.

HIV North Society
A lunchtime barbecue is being organized to bring together HIV North Society staff and service users, at-risk populations, agency partners, people living with hepatitis B and C, health workers, law enforcement and all community groups and members. There will be opening remarks by the Executive Director and Hepatitis C Outreach Worker of HIV North Society before introducing the Mayor of Grande Prairie, who will be invited to proclaim the day as World Hepatitis Day. Guests will be encouraged to view the local poster contest entries on display. Before the event wraps up, the winner of the local poster contest will be selected.

Wood Buffalo HIV & AIDS Society (WBHAS)
WBHAS will host a barbeque and information day over the weekend at a beautiful local park frequented by young families. In addition, WBHAS will be partnering with a local church to provide a luncheon for the local homeless population on World Hepatitis Day. The Hepatitis C Support Group and local Users Group will aid in the planning of these events.

The Canadian Liver Foundation aims to create awareness of hepatitis B and C and the statistics regarding the number of people affected. National CIHR Research Training Program in Hepatitis C - University of Alberta
The NCRTP students and staff at U Alberta will be setting up a display booth to educate patients, students, and the general public about the dangers of Hepatitis. Trainees and staff members will distribute pamphlets and information to members of the public. This event will encourage collaboration between the NCRTP trainees and the nurses and regular staff at U Alberta's liver research labs. In addition, the booth will be set up in a location central to people with a possible interest in liver health. Often, NCRTP trainees work only in a lab with little chance to interact with patients who are directly affected by the research they are conducting. In addition, the promotional booth will ensure that the trainee can discuss hepatitis (and therefore their research) in plain language with non-experts.

The first portion of the event will be a health fair held at Centennial Square at City Hall in Victoria. This fair will include organizations that provide housing, information on hepatitis, health services for those with hepatitis including treatment and diagnosis, counselling, peer support and aboriginal health initiatives. There will be prizes, give-aways, food and speakers at the event. There will also be street nurses present providing onsite vaccinations. The second portion of the event will be at each local organization on World Hepatitis Day where they will have information on hepatitis.

Approximately one hundred people are expected to assemble to bring public attention to the problems created by not having a needle exchange in Abbotsford. The event is being hosted by the BC Yukon Association of Drug War Survivors’ Abbotsford Branch with the support of Hep C Canada.

There will be a celebration of hepatitis C awareness at the Hepatitis C Treatment Support Group Clinics. Patients who have completed hepatitis C treatment, are currently on treatment, or are preparing for treatment will be dressed in t-shirts and will be manning booths, giving out information, quizzes and prizes. The UBC is working with Hep C Canada to organize these activities.

Vancouver, which has already marked World Hepatitis Day twice (2008 and 2009) is aiming to mark WHD 2010 to continue to raise awareness of the formidable challenge hepatitis B and C pose in British Columbia and beyond. Hep C Canada is leading WHD 2010 efforts in Vancouver, with the support of several public health stakeholders including the British Columbia Centre for Disease Control (BCCDC) and Downtown Infectious Diseases Centre. Vancouver moreover appears to be the only city in Canada to date that has issued a proclamation marking WHD 2010. Event highlights includes a WHD Media Event in downtown Vancouver, pre and post – WHD awareness activities such as distribution of WHD kits; year two of the Hep C awareness video produced by Hep C Canada via YouTube and a special concert performance and a team trip to VANDU

HepC Canada, HepC BC, South Fraser Community Services
This is the first WHD in Surrey, BC. The purpose of our event is to aid in Hep C prevention, community education and awareness of the impact Hep C & B has on our community. The WHD event will provide a mix of education and entertainment. There will be two speakers or more from our medical community to discuss various aspects of Hepatitis, from prevention and healthy living to new treatment options. Additionally, local media have been invited along with MMPs and the local MP. Hep C BC has recently opened a new office at the SFCSS, where their volunteers are available a minimum of two days a week. This is their first WHD event and they hope it will increase hepatitis awareness and increase their exposure.

ASK Wellness Kamloops
ASK Wellness Kamloops will be hitting the streets to educate and advocate for those living with Hep C and in infection prevention. They will be handing out yellow Hep C ribbons and addressing Hep C education to youths that week (although they offer this educational service year round). They want to create opportunities to educate the public and youth about safe sex practices and needle use. Furthermore, they will hand out posters and pamphlets and contact radio and local TV.

Before World Hepatitis Day, portraits will be taken of local people holding messages and statistics about HCV. These participants may or may not be HCV positive.
