The Canadian Society for International Health (CSIH) is very excited to be leading the coordination of World Hepatitis Day (May 19th) activities across Canada for the second year. Canada is joining groups around the world to raise public awareness about hepatitis B and C, two forms of life-threatening liver disease. This year, CSIH is collaborating with the Canadian Liver Foundation, the Canadian Hemophilia Society, the Canadian AIDS Treatment Information Exchange, the Hepatitis Outreach Society, Hep C Canada, the Hepatitis C Council of British Columbia, the National Aboriginal Health Organization, and other national and local community groups to increase awareness of these important diseases.

About 500 million people -- one in 12 worldwide -- are living with chronic viral hepatitis B or C.  In Canada, it is estimated that 600,000 people are infected and many don’t know it. Under the global umbrella “Am I Number 12” campaign, this year’s World Hepatitis Day themeThis is hepatitis…” aims to tell the human story of viral hepatitis and continue the battle of raising awareness of hepatitis B and C around the world.

Groups across the country are working together to organize local World Hepatitis Day events to raise awareness about hepatitis B and C. If you are having an event to mark World Hepatitis Day, we’d love to know about it! Please send photos, videos, and articles about your event that we can post on this website to whd@csih.org.

World Hepatitis Day Parliamentary Breakfast - May 13th, 2010 - Sunday, May 23, 2010

On Thursday, May 13th, 2010, a breakfast was held on Parliament Hill to mark World Hepatitis Day 2010. The event was sponsored and chaired by Joy Smith, MP, Chair of the Standing Committee on Health and was attended by a diverse group including Members of Parliament, representatives from NGOs and community based organizations, government officials, health care workers, and members of the diplomatic community. CSIH’s Executive Director, Janet Hatcher Roberts, gave words of welcome and spoke about this year’s World Hepatitis Day activities in Canada. Following the welcome, Joy Smith read aloud a message from the Minister of Health, the Honourable Leona Aglukkaq and gave opening remarks.

The first speaker was André Picard, the Public Health Reporter for the Globe and Mail. Mr. Picard’s presentation was both informative and convincing. He stressed the severity of the viral hepatitis epidemic and the need for an increased focus on hepatitis B and C.

The second speaker, Leona Quewezance, the Program Director for All Nations Hope AIDS Network, gave a moving and inspiring presentation about the human face of hepatitis. Her message was one of hope, survival and a positive pathway forward.

CSIH was very pleased with the turnout and we feel the event was successful in raising awareness about viral hepatitis among a diverse audience.

CSIH is grateful for the generous support of the Public Health Agency of Canada which is making these events across Canada a reality.

World Hepatitis Alliance Applauds World Health Assembly Decision - Friday, May 21, 2010

This statement was originally issued by the World Hepatitis Alliance on May 21, 2010.

It is with great pleasure that the World Hepatitis Alliance can today announce that a World Health Organization resolution on viral hepatitis has been agreed by the 63rd World Health Assembly in Geneva.

This is a momentous day for all of us, who over the years have campaigned collectively and tirelessly to achieve this goal.

We would like to thank every single person that supported our efforts to lobby for the resolution  which will for the first time provide a global framework and dedicated resources to tackle viral hepatitis.  It also provides global endorsement of World Hepatitis Day as the primary focus for national and international awareness-raising efforts.

The World Hepatitis is currently issuing the attached statement to global press  please do feel free to adapt this and issue in your own country should you wish.

Best wishes,

The World Hepatitis Alliance
